Utilization factor or maintenance factor？

The utilization factor is the ratio of the luminous flux projected onto the reference plane to the rated luminous flux of the light source in the lighting device. The maintenance factor is the ratio of the average illuminance or average luminance of the lighting device on the specified surface after a certain period of use to the average illuminance or average luminance of the device on the specified surface when it is newly installed under the same conditions. The former indicates how much light falls on the work surface, and the latter indicates the degree of attenuation of the lamp after a period of use (light source, failure rate and surface contamination).

Can the coefficient of utilization be higher than 1？

Accepted Answer

In street light, the coefficient of utilization is always less than 1. But in high bay and flood light, the coefficient of utilization can be higher than 1. The reason is that when the reflectivity of room surface is large and the luminous flux of the lamp will be calculated multiple times due to reflection, the utilization coefficient will be greater than the benchmark value under a specific room index, that is, the utilization coefficient is greater than 1.

Where to find the coefficient of utilization (utilization factor)?

In the photometric test report, you can find the streetlight coefficient of utilization curve. Then you can find the utilization factor in house side and street side of street light. And you can also find the utilization factor of high bay or flood light in IES test report. In the utilization factors table, you can find the UF of LED light under different room index and reflectance of various indoor surfaces (walls, ceilings and floors).
