How to reduce glare in running track lighting?

Glare on a running track is caused by the difference (contrast) between the direct brightness of floodlights and the brightness of the track surface. When the ratio of these two brightness levels is too high, it can lead to visual discomfort or impaired vision, especially when the light source is within one’s field of view. Therefore, relevant standards require limiting the Glare Ratio (GR) of running track lighting to reduce discomfort-causing glare and thereby improve visual comfort during athletic activities. For example, both the IAAF and EN 12193 require that GR be less than 50. To reduce glare in running track lighting, effective methods include using an asymmetric light distribution, installing shielding devices, and properly adjusting the aiming point of floodlights.

How much will my running track and athletic field lighting project cost?

Initial and long-term costs may depend on a variety of factors. The size of the venue, lighting requirements, number of light poles, whether there are broadcasting needs, the quality of the lighting fixtures, and warranty and service terms—all of these factors will affect the overall cost. Taking the same 400-meter standard track as an example, the lighting requirements for Lighting Class I and Lighting Class III differ by a factor of four; considering illuminance alone, the cost of the lighting fixtures would differ by a factor of four. Therefore, if you want to know how much your project will cost, we recommend consulting the relevant manufacturers or solution providers.

What’s the suitable tower height for running tracking lighting?

The height of the tower should be selected appropriately to ensure that all areas of the field, given the number of cameras used, meet the required illuminance standards. The height of the pole can be estimated preliminarily, provided that the angle formed between the center of the playing area and the center of the light pole is no less than 25°. According to the calculation formula, we can determine that h > d × tan 25°. If your light poles are located at the four corners of the field and are relatively far from the center, the corresponding pole heights should be increased; conversely, if your light poles are positioned on either side of the sidelines and relatively close to the center circle, the pole heights can be appropriately reduced. Generally speaking, the height of light poles located on either side of the sidelines can range from approximately 15 to 22 meters, while when the poles are moved to the four corners, their height needs to be increased to 30 meters or even higher.
