Question 1

What are the advantages of LED multi-purpose sports hall lighting?

Accepted Answer

Compared to traditional metal halide or fluorescent lights, multi-purpose sports hall lighting can reduce energy consumption by 50%–75%. These systems utilize control panels and intelligent control systems, allowing the court illuminance to be adjusted between different levels—such as from 300 lux for recreational use to 750 lux for professional use—which further enhances energy efficiency; LED sports field lights also feature professional optical designs and anti-glare shields that not only reduce light spill but also effectively prevent glare; furthermore, the separate LED drivers for sports lighting make maintenance very convenient—all of these are advantages of LED sports hall lighting.

Question 2

What are the different categories of sports lighting?

Accepted Answer

Sports lighting can be classified based on three criteria: light source technology, lighting application scenarios, and beam types: Light source technology includes modern mainstream LEDs, which offer 70–75% energy savings, instant-on operation, low heat generation, long lifespan (Lifetime of LEDs), and minimal maintenance; traditional HID metal halide lamps, which produce bright white light but require up to 20 minutes to warm up and consume significant energy while generating substantial heat; and older HID high-pressure sodium lamps (HPS), which offer high luminous efficacy but have poor color rendering and emit a yellowish light; Lighting fixtures are categorized by application into high-power stadium lights installed on tall poles and suited for large venues such as soccer and baseball fields; medium-power outdoor floodlights suitable for smaller venues like training fields and tennis courts; and high- and low-ceiling lights adapted for indoor venues with varying ceiling heights; In terms of beam types, there are narrow beams that achieve uniform illumination of large areas and reduce light loss through the combination of multiple beams; wide beams suitable for small courts that provide broad light dispersion; and asymmetric beams that suppress glare while accommodating both athletes and the surrounding environment.

Question 3

What’s horizontal illuminance (Eh) and vertical illuminance (Ev) in sports lighting?

Accepted Answer

The two main measurement metrics in sports lighting are horizontal illuminance (Eh) and vertical illuminance (Ev), which are used to characterize the lighting performance on the playing surface and in the space above it. Horizontal illuminance is the amount of light falling on the flat, horizontal surface of a sports field. It determines the overall brightness of the field. It helps athletes to clearly see the field boundaries, markings and playing conditions. In the past it has been the most important parameter for the evaluation of sports lighting due to the ease of calculation and measurement. Low illuminance or uneven distribution may cause dim field and visual fatigue. Vertical illuminance (More about lighting requirement for vertical illuminance) is the light that falls on vertical surfaces, such as a person’s face, a jersey, or a ball in flight. This enables athletes to follow objects in the air like basketballs or volleyballs and avoids them turning into silhouettes in dark areas. It’s also important to spectators and high-definition television broadcasts, because it provides the ability to clearly capture facial expressions, jersey numbers and high-speed action.
