Can flickering LED lights be repaired?

Yes, the problem can be fixed. For streetlights, the problem is the light source or the LED driver, we can solve it by replacing the corresponding component. For indoor lighting, firstly look for loose connections. If rewiring the wires doesn’t solve the flickering problem, you should contact the manufacturer directly, they can usually repair or replace products that are still under warranty. For out-of-warranty LED fixtures (such as ceiling lights) the LED module and the LED driver are often combined into one unit. In those cases we can just swap out the entire module and reattach the wiring. You will need to select a fixture with the appropriate wattage or luminous flux, have a basic understanding of the fixture’s structure and electrical connections, and ensure safety at all times while performing the replacement.

Is LED flickering a fire hazard?

LED light flicker does not directly cause fires, but as we’ve seen in the preceding text, flickering is an important warning sign of faulty electrical components, abnormal wiring connections, or heat buildup. Flickering itself does not cause fire, but faulty wiring connections can create electrical sparks that will probably ignite flammable materials. Overheating of the light fixture is also a major fire hazard. Therefore, if an LED light fixture starts to flicker erratically, it is important to have it inspected and fixed as soon as possible to prevent fire accidents. The LED light fixture is used for indoor or outdoor, if the light fixture begins to flicker, it is best to immediately contact the manufacturer or hire a professional electrician to carry on the on-site inspection and replacement.

Are flickering LED lights harmful?

Yes, there are 3 main adverse impacts of flickering LED lights.

Eye Strain: Flickering lights can easily cause dry eyes, eye fatigue, and headaches. Prolonged exposure to such environments can also trigger dizziness, migraines, and even seizures in people with epilepsy, significantly reducing work efficiency.

Interference with Daily Operations and Commuting: Flickering visible to the naked eye can distract people. In factories, it impairs workers’ ability to concentrate on their tasks, reducing production efficiency; flickering in road lighting interferes with the observation of road conditions, creating potential hazards for drivers; and flickering stadium lights can also affect athletes’ performance.

Deterioration of Image Quality: Some flickering is imperceptible to the naked eye but can be captured by cameras and camcorders. When shooting at high frame rates or with fast shutter speeds, images may exhibit fluctuations in brightness and rolling stripes, severely reducing the quality of photos and videos and making high-quality captures impossible.
