Applications of Roadway Lighting and Area Lighting for residential area in Malaysia

Taman PD Era is located in a prime residential area of Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia, where lighting is essential for the safety of vehicles and pedestrians at night. After assessing the client’s requirements, the ZGSM technical team proposed a professional roadway lighting solution combining ZGSM’s K-series LED street lights and H-series LED floodlights, effectively meeting both roadway lighting and area lighting needs.

Advantages of the Combined LED Street Light and Floodlight Solution

The 120W LED street lights are installed symmetrically along both sides of the community roads. They feature a “batwing” light distribution pattern (asymmetric distribution) to ensure uniform lateral illumination across the roadway (roadway lighting design standards). With an IP66 rating (weatherproof and corrosion-resistant), they are well-suited to Port Dickson’s hot, rainy tropical climate.

The 120W LED floodlights feature a 110° beam angle and adjustable bracket mounts; four floodlights are installed per pole to provide comprehensive 360-degree illumination. Positioned around lawns, children’s playgrounds, and trees, they highlight the layered landscaping and activity zones, adding depth and visual appeal to the space.

While the street lights illuminate the roadways, the floodlights compensate for lighting gaps in surrounding areas, avoiding the monotony of a single lighting source. This combination of roadway lighting and area lighting not only ensures safety but also enhances comfort for nighttime activities and boosts the community’s vitality.

For residential streets, the standards shift priority away from raw brightness and toward glare control and neighbor-friendliness:

Lower illuminance is acceptable​ — 4–8 lux average maintained is sufficient because vehicle speeds are low and conflict probability is modest.

Strict uniformity (6:1)​ — counter-intuitively tighterthan arterials, to avoid pools of light/dark that disturb residents.

BUG rating B2‑U0‑G1 or below​ — U0 (zero uplight) is essentially mandatory for dark-sky compliance; B2 limits backlight into bedroom windows; G1 keeps glare off drivers.

Mounting height​ — typically 7.5 m (25 ft)​ for residential roads, with pole spacing 3–4× the mounting height as a starting point.
