To ensure proper lighting in a space, achieving uniformity is crucial. Uniformity is a measure of how evenly light is distributed on the road. The overall uniformity ratio is the ratio of the minimum brightness to the average brightness, and the longitudinal uniformity ratio is the ratio of the minimum brightness to the maximum brightness on the centerline of the same lane. If the uniformity is good, all objects on the road are easily seen by the driver.

The common value for lighting uniformity is often referred to as U0. It is calculated by dividing the minimum luminance value (Emin) obtained from the current lighting arrangement by the average luminance value (Eavg). The value of U0 is influenced by factors such as the fixture type (spectrum), quantity, installation position and angle, and spacing (pole distance). For road lighting, for example, the recommended range for U0 is typically between 0.35 and 0.4.

The more uniform the light distribution, the better the illuminance, the more comfortable the visual experience, and the closer the illuminance uniformity is to 1, the better; otherwise, the smaller the illuminance, the more visual fatigue will increase. Of course, it is very difficult to reach 1. In most cases, U0>0.5 is already very good.
